JOSH FETTER - DEFENSIVE LINE

Josh Fetter will begin his second year at Portland State as the new defensive line coach under Jerry Glanville.
In 2006, Fetter coached defensive ends for Portland State with great success. The Viking defense led the Big Sky in turnover margin, pass efficiency defense, sacks per game, tackles for loss, third-down defense, fourth-down defense and red-zone defense. One of Fetter’s players, Cole Smith, earned second team All-Big Sky Conference, Academic All-Big Sky and Academic All-District honors.
Like wide receivers coach Jim Craft and running backs coach Frank Geske, Fetter is a holdover from Tim Walsh’s staff. He expressed to Glanville his strong desire to remain a Viking.
“We interviewed defensive line coaches across the country and it became obvious the best one was right here in the office,” said Glanville. “When I narrowed it down between Josh and the last visiting coach, Josh suggested we put them both in a closet and the one that walks out would be the coach. Right then, I knew Josh was the right guy.”
“I am fired up to be a part of a new and exciting era of Viking Football,” said Fetter. “It is a great opportunity to coach for and learn from a football coaching legend like Coach Glanville.”
Fetter came to Portland State after spending five seasons at Division II Western State of Colorado. He spent three years as defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach. He was also assistant head coach.
After earning a degree at the University of Idaho in 1996, Fetter coached at Central Washington for five years. He was in charge of defensive tackles in 1996, then defensive ends from 1997 to 2000.
Fetter was born in Tacoma, Washington. He competed in football at Idaho, where he was a two-year starter and four-year letterwinner for the Vandals. In his senior year, Fetter was the Inspirational Award winner and nominated team captain. He was part of an Idaho defense that led NCAA Division I-AA in rushing defense.
